Small dark spots, the fruiting bodies of the fungus, will appear in the gray or tan centers. Spots typically have a dark brown edge with a lighter gray or tan center. The spots start out circular but change shape as they grow and can merge with other spots. Symptoms of Septoria leaf spot also start on the older, lower leaves of a tomato plant and spread upward to newer growth. Infections most commonly occur on leaves but can also appear on stems and fruit. The area around the infection commonly turns yellow. Spots are dark brown in color and form concentric rings, or a bullseye pattern, as they grow. Early blight infections appear as spots that may start out circular or irregular in shape. Over time, infections spread upward to newer growth. Symptoms of early blight typically begin on the older, lower leaves of a tomato plant. As for infected tomato plants, there’s no choice but to eliminate diseased specimens and carefully apply all the preventive measures to keep the disease from spreading any further.Photo of Early Blight by Dwight Sipler It’s actually another fungus called Aureobasidium pullulans that competes directly with Alternaria for space and nutrients. Regarding the other species – tomato, red beet, and citrus species, there is a treatment that helps eradicate Alternaria alternata. There are no curative treatments against Alternaria solani fungus, the one that impacts tomato. It’s a bacteria that also secretes anti-fungal compounds that block spore germination. This bacteria is used to colonize space on leaves and thus keep Alternaria alternata fungus from taking hold.
